On the 5,000-acre Tunanui sheep-and-cattle station, Leslie and Ray Thompson host guests in a 90-year-old restored cottage and an adjacent four-bedroom farmhouse. The cottage has an old-fashioned appeal with its lovely kauri table and rimu wood tongue-and-groove flooring. The farmhouse is more spacious and modern, with a brick fireplace in the comfortable lounge and incredible views of the Mahia peninsula and the sea. Both houses have kitchen facilities and a shared TV -- ideal for a longer stay -- but you need to bring your own supplies. Ray will take experienced horseback riders out to see the station at work. The station is 5 km (3 mi) off the road, and city slickers may jokingly grumble that the silence can almost hurt your ears.
