Skippers Canyon

Fodor's Review:

One of the enduring attractions in the area is the drive up Skippers Canyon. Harking back to the days when the hills around Queenstown were filled with gold diggers seeking their fortunes, the Skippers Road was hand carved out of rock and reaches into the deep recesses of the Shotover Valley. Nomad Safaris (03/442-6699 or 0800/688-222. www.queenstown4wd.com) runs two trips a day up the Skippers Canyon in specialized four-wheel-drive vehicles. Queenstown Heritage Tours (03/442-5949. www.queenstown-holiday.co.nz) gives historical tours with the comforts of air-conditioned vehicles, gourmet snacks, and local wines.
