With its refreshing, contemporary design, this rather expansive resort is a departure from the usual alpine stone-and-timber lodgings in the region. Opened in 2005, Oakridge has modern but homey units scattered among lawns and a pool complex. The whole property looks across an open valley to the peaks of Aspiring National Park. Two heated swimming pools and a series of warm spas are set in a rock-lined amphitheater, overlooked by the resort restaurant (which has an outdoor patio for good weather and a cozy fireplace for bad). Enjoying a glass of local wine while soaking in the spa is hard to beat after a day on the road.
