Kauri Cliffs Lodge Review

Several holes of a par-72 championship golf course sweep past this cliff-top lodge, which is truly outstanding. Ocean views reach to the Cavalli Islands; you also look over three private beaches—one shimmering pink. The spa offers a range of treatments from a waterfall massage at NZ$200 to a special massage for golfers at NZ$225 designed to ease the body after playing on the award winning course. If you want some time being looked after while being alone take the owner's cottage at NZ$8,750 a night. That said the lodge also caters to families and there are many options on the property for parents and children to spend time together (or apart). Staff are trained to deal with families traveling together with children of all ages.

Regal Cliffside Escape
Built on the ruggedly beautiful terrain of the northern edge of the country, the Kauri Cliffs is an off-the-beaten-path slice of heaven for hard-core golf enthusiasts. Perched on the edge of the dramatic seaside bluffs of the North Island, this Dave Harman-designed 18-hole course has panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, Cape Brett, and the Cavalli Islands—15 of the greens are perched on what feels like the edge of the earth. Non-golfers can take advantage of a full slate of activities like tennis, chef-prepared picnics on the beach, wine tours, and hot-air balloon rides. The Lodge itself is the epitome of understated elegance and the twenty-two cottages each have private porches and elegantly appointed sitting rooms with fireplaces.

    Memorable New Year's Holiday

A long-awaited holiday stay at Kauri Cliffs Lodge finally came to fruition in late December, 2013. (Some cherished and well-travelled Scottish relatives have been praising this property for the past few years.)

Auckland arrival was via Singapore Airlines, flight 285 J; another superlative SQ cabin crew. A "red eye" non-stop out of our fine home of SIN; her B77W's most accommodating (and well-known, from numerous SQ J working trips) business class seats allowed for more than sufficient sleep. Smooth AKL rental car transaction for the drive to Kauri Cliffs.

Lodge arrival and check-in most personal and seamless. (Perhaps aided by their on-going, positive relations with the Scottish relatives.)

Our suite was particularly serene; the Scottish relatives were most helpful in suggesting their preferred lodgings.

Can't adequately convey how much we savoured walking, touring and "picnicking" for hours during our days on holiday. Also, most therapeutic spa treatments and swimming. And, a few thrilling hours, helicopter touring; a natural for this life-long aviation fanatic. (And not even one round of golf, unlike the golfing-crazed Scottish relatives.)

Efficient (albeit, reluctant) departure for drive back to Auckland for a brief business stay at the Hilton Auckland. (And most positive working stay at that particular Hilton; review forthcoming.)

An all-too-short holiday (but still longer than our occasional ~ 48-hour rendezvouses at various business travel hotels); so hope to return to Kauri Cliffs in near future.

Savour your times at a refined, rejuvenating retreat.
