Fodor's Review

Rescued from the muddy riverbed and restored to first-class order, the Wairua plied the river's remote middle reaches in the early 1900s, moving not only people but also cattle, sheep, and horses. Now based in Wanganui, this classic riverboat makes regular two- and three-hour trips upriver. They’re run by Skipper Dave McDermid, one of the team who rescued the vessel. Operating times vary; however, scheduled cruises depart Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 11, from approximately November to April. Other sailings are by arrangement.
