Fodor's Review

To get a sense of the Taranaki's turbulent history, drive inland through the countryside from Oakura to this reserve. A Department of Conservation trail leads ½ km (about ¼ mile) from the parking lot to the site of a pā (fortified village), a former stronghold of the Nga Mahanga a Tairi hapū (subtribe). Regenerating native forest has covered part of the site, but still visible are the main defensive ditch and stonewall terraces that drop a considerable way from the highest part of the village to the Oakura River. There are no facilities. Take Highway 45 southwest out of New Plymouth to the beach suburb of Oakura, 17 km (10 miles) away. On the far side of the township, turn left onto Wairau Road and follow the signs, veering left onto Surrey Hill Road and left again onto Koru Hill Pa Road for 4 km (2½ miles).
