Fodor's Review

In 1972, Valda Poletti and Dave Clarkson began transforming what was then a clay wasteland into one of New Zealand's few "gardens of international significance." Featured in the BBC documentary Around the World in 80 Gardens, Te Kainga Marire resembles a piece of native New Zealand bush and features everything from alpine to forest plants. There's even a hunter's camp and bushman's hut, legacies of Dave's earlier days as a professional deer hunter. Though within the city limits, this gorgeous green refuge certainly lives up to its name—which means "peaceful encampment" in Māori.
