Few rivers cut right through a mountain range, as does the Manawatu. It scythes a deep, forest-lined gorge through the North Island divide, separating the Ruahine and Tararua ranges. This company runs trips into the gorge on jet boats, which climb narrow chutes, skim past huge boulders, and reveal scenery that road travelers can't see. The 25-minute rides depart from the eastern side of the gorge, a 25-minute drive from Palmerston North. Reservations are essential.
