Snug Lounge

Updated 02/18/2014

Fodor's Review

The casual but stylish ambience is designed to encourage conversation and bring people together at this Japanese yakitori grill and cocktail bar, and it works. The menu focuses on small plates to share, with a feature being the evening Chow Down: all you can eat from a list of grilled and kusiage (deep-fried) delights for NZ$25. The teriyaki-marinated chicken is to die for. Small bowls, tasting platters (big and tasty), and a cross-cultural nod with small burgers

also feature. Fancy a dessert? They're part cocktail here—for example, lemon meringue or cookies and cream, alcohol infused. Good-quality wines, craft beers and sake are also served. Occupying the heritage-listed and recently restored White Heart Hotel, the Snug has cozy nooks and crannies plus a sheltered courtyard with massive gas fire and barbecue. Lunch is served on Friday, but otherwise it's dinner only, from 4 until late.
