North Island's West Coast Sights

Wairua

Updated 02/18/2014

Fodor's Review

This classic, smallish riverboat, rescued from the muddy riverbed and restored to first-class order, plied the river's remote middle reaches in the early 1900s, moving not only people but also cattle, sheep, and horses. Now the Wairua is based in Wanganui and makes regular two-hour cruises upriver (NZ$36) and, by arrangement, longer day trips to Hipango Park (NZ$45) during the summer. Skipper Dave McDermid is one of the team who rescued this and other riverboats

from the riverbed.
