Attentive owner Terry Parkes transformed a 19th-century hospital into an opulent city-center retreat with modern art lining the walls, including works by leading Taranaki artists Don Driver, Tom Kriesler, and Michael Smither. Guest rooms and suites have traditional armchairs, good work desks, DVD players, broadband Internet, and double whirlpool baths or massage showers. Adjacent to the hotel are four suites, three with kitchen facilities and all with the same chic decor
found in the hotel. Table, the connected dinner-only restaurant, has received many local awards. The menu, with main courses fixed at NZ$39, changes seasonally to emphasize fresh local fare, showcasing salmon, duck, organic Angus beef fillet, free-range pork fillet, and New Zealand's best wines. But before you imbibe, Terry might let you take a hotel bike for a spin to drink in the city's shoreline.
