The Flying Fox Review

Even the arrival is exceptional at this truly unique lodging. You'll arrive by river (jet-boat or kayak) or reach it by its namesake Flying Fox—a simple, aerial cable car—which deposits you high above the west bank of the Whanganui River. There you'll find a pair of cottages, each accommodating two to four people, plus the romantic "Glory Cart" gypsy caravan hideaway. They're distinctly eco-friendly, from their construction (by host John) using recycled materials to their facilities, such as the wood- and gas-fired showers, solar lighting, and outdoor clawfoot tub. Inside, they're warmly comfortable, with rug-covered brick floors, tie-dye throws, carved screens, and wood-burning stoves. The entire property is certified organic. Meals can be provided (ask in advance). Bed and breakfast is available for NZ$240 (double). For your lunch or dinner you can bring your own groceries, or there's a supply of ready-made frozen meals, featuring the home-grown organic produce. Plus there's a little store with a handful of interesting products. You can get here from Wanganui on the Whanganui River Road Mail Tour; for those who are driving, there's secure parking on the road side of the river.
