North Island's West Coast Sights

Puke Ariki

Updated 02/18/2014

Fodor's Review

Across the road from the Wind Wand is the region's heritage, research, and information center. Though not as large as Wellington's Museum of New Zealand, Te Papa Tongarewa, Puke Ariki tells compelling stories of the region, from its volcanic inception to the Land Wars to the discovery of natural oil and gas in 1959 to today's surfing culture. Interactive science exhibits for children are on the lower level. The in-house Arborio Café is worth a stop, too, as demonstrated

by the presence of locals.
