Fodor's Review

Personable owner Terry Parkes has transformed this 19th-century hospital into an opulent city retreat decorated with contemporary art by leading Taranaki artists Don Driver, Tom Kriesler, and Michael Smither. The hotel's stylish, individually designed accommodations include modern amenities like sound systems, Wi-Fi, and double whirlpool baths or massage showers. Adjacent to the hotel are four suites, three with kitchen facilities and all with the same sort of chic decor found in the original building. Table at Nice, the hotel restaurant, is considered one of New Plymouth's best, thanks to a refined menu that includes organic Angus beef fillet, free-range pork belly, venison tenderloin, and New Zealand's best wines. Before you imbibe, Terry might let you take a hotel bike for a spin to drink in the city's shoreline.
