Fodor's Review

High on Mt. Taranaki, this hotel and restaurant has a long-standing reputation for its dramatic setting and fine food. In 2010, it was reincarnated after being purchased by the local Māori people, Ngati Ruanui, who were keen to provide jobs for their own through tourism. They are doing a great job by all accounts. The 10 attractive rooms (eight doubles, a twin, and a family unit that sleeps four) have en suites with spa baths plus delightful views of the national park forest. A café serves breakfast until early afternoon along with lunch and snacks, while the restaurant offers contemporary and classic cuisine made with local produce at dinner. Trails from the lodge traverse the lower reaches of the mountain through a mix of subalpine shrublands and dense forest. The small ski club is a 10-minute drive (or 20-minute walk) away.
