The gardens at this colonial mansion, high on Napier Hill, have panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the beautiful Kaweka Ranges. The rooms have native timber floors, American king-size beds, and elaborate bathrooms. Large verandas open onto landscaped grounds, where you can lounge by the heated swimming pool; there's also a lovely fireplace in the lounge. The four-course set dinners are accompanied by a predinner drink and hors d'oeuvres, but must be booked in advance. Pros: A warm welcome from friendly hosts, fabulous views, most of the vegetables are home grown. Con: It would be hard to find on a dark night.
