Fodor's Review

Napier's twin city in Hawke's Bay is 18 km (11 mi) south of Napier, down Highway 2. The town doesn't have the same concentrated interest of Napier, but buildings in the center exhibit similar art deco flourishes—the 1931 earthquake did a great deal of damage here, too.

Te Mata Peak. Just out of town, a short drive 3 km (2 mi) to the southeast of the village of Havelock North provides access to this famed local viewpoint where it's possible to gaze across

the plains to Napier and the rumpled hills beyond. The summit is a 15-minute (signposted) drive along Te Mata Peak Road from Havelock North.

Hawke's Bay Opera House. Where Hastings stands out is in its Spanish Mission buildings, a style borrowed from California, which produced such beauties as the Hawke's Bay Opera House. But there's more: This building and its beautiful auditorium play an active part in the social and cultural life of the town and have a reputation for offering a range of musical concerts that segue from the classical to rock and more. Check the website as you may be able to catch a world-renowned artist who happens to like the space, for a modest ticket price. 101 Hastings St. and Heretaunga St. E, Hawke's Bay, 4122. hawkesbayoperahouse.co.nz.

The Westermans Building. This is a shining example of Art Deco architecture. 101 Heretaunga St. E, Hastings.

Hawke's Bay Farmers' Market. For picnic supplies, visit the Hawke's Bay Farmers' Market. The market is held at A&P Showgrounds on Sunday from 8:30 to 12:30. Local products include handmade cheese, breads, ice cream, and fruit. It's also a good place to people watch. Kenilworth Rd., Hawke's Bay. hawkesbayfarmersmarket.co.nz/.

Hastings Visitor Information Centre. Stop in from 9 to 5 on weekdays, 9 to 4 Saturdays and 10 to 3 Sundays for information on Hastings. Cnr. Russell St. N and Heretaunga St., Hastings. 06/873–5526. www.visithastings.co.nz.
