Fodor's Review

Twenty kilometers (12½ miles) from Tauranga, the 45-minute summit walk through the 108-acre park on the Papamoa Hills (Te Rae o Papamoa) will take you past Māori pā (fortified village) sites dating back to 1460, considered some of the most important and earliest archaeological sites in the region. You climb through pine forest, then open farmland. As you emerge from the trees, views take in everything between Mauao and White Island. Follow the clearly marked track from the car park, which is at the end of Poplar Lane, which turns off old SH2. (You'll need to get off the tolled Expressway for access. If traveling from Tauranga, take the Papamoa exit then follow the signs indicating free road to Te Puke. Go past Welcome Bay Road then look for Poplar Lane, on the right.)
