Fodor's Review

Nothing quirky or gimmicky here. This is the real thing, with a Category One Historic Places Trust rating. Started up around 1900, this was the first diesel-powered gold processing plant in New Zealand and its last original stamper battery, the only six-head stamper battery in the world. Geologist Ash Franklin offers an enthusiastic tour of the plant and brings alive the region's fascinating mining and geology history. Entry to the battery is by guided tour only. Located 2 km (1 mile) north of Coromandel township and clearly signposted at the start of Buffalo Road.
