Paparoa Marae Review
The whanau (family) of Paparoa Marae provides a marae (meeting house) experience that is down-to-earth. It's a working marae so, along with a traditional welcome and cultural performance, Maori elders explain the marae, Maori carvings, and other aspects of Maori history, culture, and protocol. You're invited to share in a hangi (the traditional method of Maori cooking) meal. A marae visit costs around $35-$75, including the hangi. It's about 20 minutes out of Tauranga, just off State Highway 2 in the village of Te Puna.
