Fodor's Review

This little self-styled café is outstanding. Don't be fooled by the vegetarian menu; this is no health bar. The counter displays risotto cakes, Florentines, and apple, pear, apricot, and fig shortbread; the berry friend (a small, sweet cake made from ground almonds and egg whites, often topped or filled with fruit) is as good as any you will find. Try a breakfast of potato and fresh herb frittata, or pan-fried polenta with smoked field mushroom, spinach and feta for lunch. Wheat and gluten-free diets are well catered for. Part-owner Clare Rodley has been baking for pocket money since she was a kid. The wraps are irresistible, and the local cheeses and chutneys from the deli counter make great picnic fixings. They also support local artists and revolving works are for sale on the wall. The store sells local cheeses outside the door during the Grahamstown Saturday Market. A real community café.
