Here's a celebration of Coromandel's aquaculture set in spacious, landscaped grounds with a simply delightful ambience to while away an afternoon. You don't have to like mussels, but it will help. Think of any conceivable way to serve fresh, fat mussels and you'll find it here, in the café established by the original mussel-farming family in the district. Big bold pictures of the farms grace the walls. The menu? Start with a simple hot-steamed mussel pot, with your choice of sauce, sample grilled mussels in half shells, or fill up on a classic mussel kitchen chowder or fritters. Branch out and simply ask for fish-and-chips, or a generous salad, or burger, or massage the sweet tooth with ice cream. Located 4 km (2½ miles) south of Coromandel township. And after you've mussel-ed up, there's a big tempting cabinet crammed with goodies such as vacuum-packed mussel chowder or smoked mussels that you can purchase for later. Open daily from 9 am for breakfast and lunch, and for dinner from Boxing day to the end of February.
