This resort complex has the widest range of accommodations in the area, and they're all on the beach, about a 10-minute drive down the road from the madding Mount Maunganui crowd. If you feel like camping, or parking your campervan, sites range from NZ$20 (garden view) to NZ$28 (sea view). There's also a range of accommodations, starting with spartan cabins, where you'll need to bring your own bed linens, and bathrooms and kitchen are shared. Or you can stretch out in one of the private holiday units or the spacious, light-filled, cedar-wood suites; 13 of these 19 villas are absolute beachfront (NZ$263); the decks are built onto the sand dunes just feet from the surf. This property is extremely popular in peak summer holiday season (Christmas to end of January) so book well ahead. Better still, come at any other time of the year, the climate is mild year-round and nothing beats a good walk on the beach in winter. This spot is a fantastic base for the region. There's a surf club adjacent, so lifeguards will watch over you while you're swimming (if you keep between the flags).
