Moanarua Beach Cottage

2 Hoterini St., Whakatane, Bay of Plenty, 3121, New Zealand

Hosts Miria and Taroi Black provide their own variety of Māori manaakitanga (hospitality) for a truly cultural homestay experience. The doorway of the guest whare (house, in this case cottage) is framed with traditional carvings representing the kaitiaki (caretakers) of Miria and Taroi's respective tribes, while the interior is decorated with contemporary Māori art, such as harekeke (woven flax). Murals, sculpture, and carvings in the garden depict the cultural history of the area. Guests also have the use a hot tub and a barbeque and there are kayaks to rent. Those staying longer could well be invited to share a hāngi (a traditional method of cooking food). Miria and Taroi's hospitality, humor, and stories make up for the whare's humble furnishings; this is a smaller-scale, more intimate and definitely authentic version of a Māori cultural experience provided on tours.
