Fodor's Review

The New Zealand Historic Places Trust is committed to rebuilding the Timeball Station tower (but not a full rebuild of the station) in stages, over the next few years. This piece of maritime history was one of only five remaining timeball stations known to be in working order in the world, and it holds a special place in the hearts of Canterbury people. Built in the 1870s the ball would drop from its mast as a time signal for ships. The castle-like building was destroyed over the course of the 2010 earthquakes but much of the building was retrieved and stored so it's hoped the tower will be able to be rebuilt.
