Fodor's Review

Come to stroll through the grounds along the Avon River, wandering under the trees and through the well-tended perennial gardens. The earthquakes dealt a severe blow to Mona Vale, one of Christchurch's great historic homesteads, and it has been undergoing extensive repair work, with only its grounds kept open to the public. The historic gate house at the Fendalton Road entrance is also under repair. Built in 1899, the house and 13½-acre gardens were almost lost to the city in the 1960s when the estate was in danger of being subdivided. A public campaign saw the homestead "sold" to individual Christchurch residents for NZ$10 per square foot. Catch a No. 9 bus from the city.
