Sadly, this dominating landmark at the heart of the city faces demolition after being severely damaged in the 2010 earthquakes. Building of the original Gothic-style church started in 1864, 14 years after the arrival of the Canterbury Pilgrims, and was completed in 1904. There has been much angst in Christchurch over its fate and whether restoration was a viable option, including legal challenges to the highest court in the land. However, the Anglican Church has plans
to build a new contemporary cathedral on the site within a decade. Until then the Cardboard Cathedral is a temporary replacement.
