Fodor's Review

For the most part, the historic Arts Centre (which used to be a popular arts, studios, theaters, shopping, and dining complex) remains a construction site, after being badly damaged in the earthquakes. It is undergoing a seven-year restoration costing close to NZ$300 million, with some of the buildings due to start opening to the public in 2015. It's still worth a look to see the exterior of its fine collection of Gothic Revival stone buildings, which were originally built as Canterbury's University. It was here that NZ-born physicist Ernest, Lord Rutherford (1871–1937) completed his undergraduate degree. Rutherford became one of the most influential scientists of the 20th century, a pioneer in nuclear physics, famous for his work with splitting the atom.
