Richard Pearse Memorial

  • Address: Main Waitohi Rd., Timaru

Fodor's Review:

A 20-minute drive northwest from Timaru is Pleasant Point, an area known for its role in aviation history. Some months before the Wright brothers took flight in America, a local farmer nicknamed "Bamboo Dick" took bicycle wheels somewhere they'd never been before, launching the first powered flight in New Zealand out in the fields a few miles outside town. The Richard Pearse Memorial, a reproduction of his plane, marks the spot where Pearse crashed into a hedge on March 31, 1903. To get here, take the Waitohi-Pleasant Point Road, then take a left on Opihi Terrace Road, and another left onto Main Waitohi Road.
