Built from limestone blocks, the Hurunui Hotel, New Zealand's oldest continually licensed hotel (since 1860), refreshed weary drovers bringing sheep down from Marlborough. It is still a welcoming place to take a break. A bed for the night is relatively cheap ($40 per person, including a cooked breakfast), and the restaurant with its old-fashioned pub serves à la carte dinners from $17 and an all-day menu from $15. Get a drink from the bar (perhaps a glass of wine from the small vineyard out back) and enjoy it out in the garden.
