$$-$$$, New Zealand, Christchurch
Fodor's Review:
The Kitchen combines a European-style coffeehouse with an à la carte restaurant. Seasonal dishes sometimes get a German or French spin. Insider tip: the chef encourages his regular guests and those in the know to cross the road to the City Seafood Market and pick out a piece of fish they'd like cooked. The reasonably priced desserts ($7.50) are scrumptious -- you don't need a food allergy to enjoy the gluten-free dark "chocolate thrill." Megawatt is aptly named, as you can see just how much power the South Island is using at any given time on the meter near the front counter. The space is lighted by early-20th-century street lamps to boot.
