Christchurch Art Gallery—Te Puna O Waiwhetu
Christchurch Art Gallery—Te Puna O Waiwhetu Review
The city's stunning art gallery wows visitors as much for its architecture as for its artwork. Its tall, wavy glass facade was inspired by Christchurch's Avon River and the shape of the native koru fern. The museum's Māori name refers to an artesian spring onsite and means "the wellspring of star-reflecting waters." Free guided tours, entertaining events, family activities, and iPod audio tours make the gallery a must-see. Shop for a great selection of gifts, or relax at Alchemy Café and Wine Bar. Although the gallery initially appeared to have stood up well to the earthquakes, its foundations were undermined, and at time of writing it is still closed, with no date set for reopening, so for now you'll have to content yourself with ogling the stunning architecture.
