$$$$, Christchurch
Fodor's Review:
Once a girls' school, this magnificent 1891 villa now sees pampered guests instead of disciplined students. The centrally located house brims with beautiful elements: the Victorian veranda, a stained-glassed window above the entrance depicting the Charlotte Jane (one of the first four ships to bring settlers to Christchurch), a native kauri- and rimu-wood staircase, a rimu-paneled dining room, and period furniture throughout the 10 beautiful guest rooms. Just across the courtyard, a converted 1930s house holds two more suites, a rimu-lined bar, and a restaurant. Delicious breakfasts are served until 11 AM.
