Named so because it looked like a giant's house to a visiting child, this grand old 1880 villa is full of art in unexpected places. Up the steep driveway hides a large garden crisscrossed by paths, fantastic larger-than-life mosaics, and colorful, welded sculptures. One of the guest rooms has a boat-shaped bed, another opens to a mosaic rose garden and conservatory. The garden and gallery are open for public tours from 2 to 4 daily, April to Christmas and noon to 5, Christmas to the end of April ($NZ20), with a garden cafe in the height of summer. The garden is now a Garden of National Significance. At this writing Giant's House is closed May–August, 2014, for earthquake repairs.
