The Giant's House

68 Rue Balguerie, Akaroa, Canterbury, 7250, New Zealand

Named so because it looked like a giant's house to a visiting child, this grand old 1880 villa is full of art in unexpected places. Up the steep driveway hides a large garden crisscrossed by paths, fantastic larger-than-life mosaics, and colorful, welded sculptures. One of the guest rooms has a boat-shape bed, another opens to a mosaic rose garden and conservatory. The garden has been endorsed as a New Zealand Garden of National Significance. The garden and gallery are open for public tours from 2 to 4 daily, April to Christmas and 12:30 to 4:30 on cruise ships days in the summer (NZ$20), with a garden café in the height of summer.
