Tram Around Town in Christchurch

Christchurch Tramway. There's something nostalgic and reassuring about the ding-ding of these heritage trams. After the 2010 earthquake they disappeared from the cityscape for almost three years. At the time of this writing they travel between New Regent Street and the Canterbury Museum and look forward to doing the original loop of the city soon. All-day tickets allow you to hop on and off and explore the inner city. You'll pass the remains of the Christchurch Cathedral and continue along to the Avon River where you can get off for some punting (gambling). The Canterbury Museum is well worth a visit (particularly with kids). It's next to the Botanical Gardens. The Tramway ticket office is in Cathedral Junction but you can buy tickets at other places en route and on board. Cathedral Junction, Christchurch, 8013. 03/366–7830. www.welcomeaboard.co.nz. $NZ10. Oct.–Mar., 9–6; Apr.–Sept., 10–5.
