Arthur's Pass National Park

Hiking and Walking

hikes. Arthur's Pass National Park has plenty of half- and full-day hikes and 11 backcountry trails with overnight huts for backpacking. A popular walk near Arthur's Pass Village is the short Punchbowl Falls Track, which passes through diverse sub-alpine forest to a 140 m (450 ft) high waterfall. It takes roughly 1 hour to do the track. For a full-day hike, trails leading to the summits of various mountains are all along State Highway 73. Be prepared for variable weather conditions. Two of the most popular and challenging overnight treks are the Cass/Lagoon Saddle trip and the Avalanche-Crow route over Avalanche Peak. For these, you'll need an experienced leader and full gear. The Department of Conservation Visitor Centre has up-to-date information on weather and trail conditions. Fill out an intention form, and remember to let them know when you have completed your trip.
