Great Barrier Island, the largest in the gulf, has a population of around 1,100, and is mostly agricultural. It's popular with surfers—particularly Awana Beach. Motuihe, a popular swimming spot, was a prisoner-of-war camp during World War I and the scene of a daring escape: Count Felix Von Luckner, known as the Sea Devil, commandeered the camp commander's boat and got as far as the Kermadec Islands before being recaptured. Access is by ferry, air, or yacht.

The Great Barrier Reef is one of our national treasures and needs to be seen before its gone. Water temperature risings are killing the coral and everyone deserves to see this. The colour and beauty is breathtaking. It's not hard to get too, there are many tours that will take you there.
