This motel in a harborside suburb a 15-minute drive east of the city center (and close to a major bus route into the city) has been owned by the same family for 30 years and offers exceptional value in one of Auckland's most exclusive suburbs. Rooms come in three versions: studios or one- or two-bedroom units; the two-bedroom units are particularly good for families, with a lounge room separate from the bedroom. All rooms have separate, fully equipped kitchens, including French-press coffeemakers and they are thinking about installing Internet access. Because the motel is immaculately maintained and extremely popular, particularly with an older set, rooms must be booked several months in advance. Rates do not rise over the busy summer period. Pros: Close to the beach; lovely suburb; friendly, knowledgeable hosts. Cons: No Internet, very basic.
