There's no better vantage point for Ponsonby Road people-watching than the tables outside this longtime local favorite; if you want to fit in, wear black and big sunglasses. Should outdoors not be an option, you can sit in the minimalist concrete interior of what was once a motorcycle shop. You can keep your shades on there, too. With the eclectic clientele, the people-watching is just as good inside. The excellent food is largely Italian, and the place is known for its
thin-crust pizzas. It's also known for the attitude of the staff, who sometimes neglect customers, but the food mostly makes up for service. The bar cranks up as the sun goes down. On weekend mornings, aspiring celebrities and the "love your work set" can be seen having a late breakfast in public. A lot of air-kissing goes on at SPQR, and it is decidedly popular with the gay community.
