That it's slightly away from the heaviest foot traffic on Ponsonby Road doesn't deter the crowds that come for the glorious Mediterranean food in this old house. Spanish flavors pepper a menu that lets favorites survive changes, so you'll always find the squid-ink noodles with seafood and the roast pork chop filled with chorizo, pancetta, and apple, with garlic-and-honey aioli—a fiendish dish that tempts you to eat beyond capacity. The wine list has a good sampling of New Zealand's best at reasonable prices, and the restaurant's only fault is the staff can be quite aloof. This is not a place for intimate dining; the buoyant crowd sees to that, and the toilets are up quite a steep set of stairs.
