Base Backpackers

Fodor's Review:

Just off the harbor end of Queen Street you'll find this popular new arrival on the backpacker circuit. Double rooms come with small bathrooms, security lockers, and an extra single bed. A floral scent signals you've arrived at the women-only Sanctuary floor; this has a few extra frills, including hair dryers in the bathrooms. The rooftop deck looks over office buildings out to the harbor. The café is open in the morning and evening, serving meals such as fish-and-chips, lasagna, and spaghetti Bolognese. A lively bar has happy hour from 5 to 8 every evening. Pros: Women-only floor, inexpensive, close to town, in-house bar. Con: Fort Street is seedy.

  • Hotel Details: 37 rooms, 39 dorm rooms with shared bath
  • In-room: kitchen.
  • In-hotel: restaurant, bar, laundry facilities, Internet terminal.
