Theater in Auckland went through a slump in the 1990s when the Mercury Theatre, then the main professional theater, closed down. Aucklanders had to endure accusations of philistinism, mostly from Wellingtonians, for not being able to support even one theater. One of the newly out-of-work actors took up the matter as a personal crusade and formed the Auckland Theatre Company. Now a vibrant dramatic scene exists once again. The ATC has a mixed repertory that includes New Zealand and international contemporary drama and the classics. The company performs at the Herald Theatre at the Aotea Centre, Sky City Theatre, and the Maidment Theatre at the university.
