Mt. Victoria Review

Long before European settlement, the ancient volcano of Mt. Victoria was the site of a Maori pa (fortified village) of the local Kawerau tribe. On the northern and eastern flanks of the hill you can still see traces of the terraces once protected by palisades of sharpened stakes. Don't be put off by its name—this is more molehill than mountain. The climb is easy, but the views are outstanding. Mt. Victoria is signposted on Victoria Road, a few minutes' walk from the Esplanade Hotel.

    if you're in the area...

i used to live in nz as a kid, and occasionally we would go to mount victoria and climb to the top and slide down on cardboard boxes (which you can get from supermarket car parks)
my memory is vague but there is some site of interest there, i think it's a big cannon or something
but it's a nice place to go with children
take a picnic or something and make a day of it :)
