Since the 1990s, this zoo has focused on providing its animals with the most natural habitats possible, as well as on breeding and conservation. The primates area, sea lion and penguin shores, and the Pridelands section, where lions, giraffes, zebra, springbok, rhino, and ostriches range in savannalike grasslands, best exemplify this approach. To catch a glimpse of New Zealand flora and fauna, spend time in the New Zealand Native Aviary, where you walk among the birds, and the Kiwi and Tuatara Nocturnal House, which are at opposite ends of the zoo. In early 2004, an enterprising Asian elephant escaped by dropping a tree on an electric fence and took herself for a walk in the neighboring park. She was coaxed home after 45 minutes, and the zoo's fences are now elephant-proof. By car, take Karangahape Road (which turns into Great North Road) west out of the city, past Western Springs. Take a right onto Motions Road. Buses from the city stop opposite Motions Road.
