Chamberlain Park Golf Course. This 18-hole public course in a parkland is a five-minute drive off Northwestern Motorway (Route 16) from the city. The club shop rents clubs, shoes, and carts. Green fees are around NZ$25 midweek and NZ$32 on weekends, varying with time of day. It's one of the cheapest golf courses in Auckland, and because it's on volcanic rock, the course holds up in wet weather. 46 Linwood Ave., Western Springs, Auckland, 1025. 09/815–4999.
Formosa Golf Resort. About 45 minutes—an hour in traffic—from the city center, this 18-hole course, designed by New Zealand golfing legend Sir Bob Charles, has views of the Hauraki Gulf from most holes. Green fees are NZ$85 and cart fees NZ$55. The resort has a range of accommodations, but be patient with the poor automated phone system. 110 Jack Lachland Dr., Beachlands, Auckland, 2147. 09/536–5895. www.formosa.co.nz.
Gulf Harbour Country Club. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. (some say the world's finest designer of classic golf courses), this course is set against the spectacular backdrop of the Hauraki Gulf. It's about 40 minutes north of Auckland (if the traffic is flowing) on the East Coast's Whangaparoa Peninisula. Clubs can be rented, the greens fee is NZ$180, and a cart is NZ$25 per person. Winter specials are posted on the website. After a round, take a stroll around the Gulf Harbour Marina to look at the range of yachts and launches. Gulf Harbour Dr., Rodney District, Auckland, 0930. 09/424–0971. www.gulfharbourcountryclub.co.nz.
Muriwai Golf Club. A 40-minute drive north of the city brings you to this links course near a bird sanctuary, with outstanding views of the coast, even from the "19th hole." Because the links are on sandy soil, they can be played even if the rest of Auckland is sodden. Clubs and carts can be rented; the greens fee is NZ$115. Coast Rd., Muriwai Beach, Waitakere City, Auckland, 0881. 09/411–8454. www.muriwaigolfclub.co.nz.
Titirangi Golf Club. Designed by renowned golf architect Alister MacKenzie, this is one of the country's finest 18-hole courses. Nonmembers are welcome to play provided they contact the course in advance (and get through the painful automated phone system). Once booked, you must show evidence of membership at an overseas club. Clubs and golf carts can be rented, and the greens fee is NZ$150. Titirangi is a 15-minute drive south of the city. Links Rd., Waitakere City, Auckland, 0600. 09/827–5749. www.titirangigolf.co.nz.
