Chamberlain Park Golf Course. Chamberlain Park Golf Course is an 18-hole public course in a parkland location a five-minute drive (off Northwestern Motorway, Route 16) from the city. The club shop rents clubs, shoes, and carts. Green fees are NZ$30 midweek and $32 on weekends. It's one of the cheapest golf courses in Auckland and because it's based on volcanic rock the course holds up in wet weather. 46 Linwood Ave., Western Springs, Auckland, 1025. 09/815–4999. www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/whatson/sports/golf.asp.
Formosa Golf Resort. Formosa Golf Resort is about 45 minutes from the city center. A cart is NZ$20 per person. There are specials in winter, which are posted on the Web site. Gulf Harbour Dr., Rodney District, Auckland, 0930. 09/424–0971. www.gulfharbourcountryclub.co.nz.
Muriwai Gold Club. Muriwai Gold Club, a 40-minute drive north of the city brings you to this links course near a bird sanctuary. The course has outstanding views of the coast. The views from the "19th hole" are outstanding. Coast Rd., Muriwai Beach, Waitakere City, Auckland, 0881. 09/411–8454. www.muriwaigolfclub.co.nz.
Titirangi Golf Club. Titirangi Golf Club, a 15-minute drive south of Auckland City and with a course designed by renowned golf architect Alister MacKenzie, is one of the country's finest 18-hole courses. Nonmembers are welcome to play provided they contact the course in advance but, like Formosa, Titirangi has a really painful automated phone system. Once booked, you must show evidence of membership at an overseas club. Clubs and golf carts can be rented; the green fee is NZ$150. Links Rd., Waitakere City, Auckland, 0600. 09/827–5749. www.titirangigolf.co.nz.
