Sailing in Auckland

No experience is necessary to sail on America's Cup yachts NZL 40 and NZL 41 with Sail NZ (Viaduct Harbour. 09/359-5987. www.sailnz.co.nz). The yachts are crewed, but you can participate. Two-hour trips cost $140. Or you can take part in a match race between the two yachts; these take about three hours and cost $195. An "Experience Sailing" trip ($48) with Pride of Auckland (09/373-4557. www.prideofauckland.com) departs at 2:45 daily. The trip takes about 45 minutes and includes entry to the National Maritime Museum. If you are wanting more than a quick trip, the Pride of Auckland team will also organize longer trips, which can include dinner or lunch, or if you are looking to explore the gulf islands they will sort out a boat, skipper, and crew.
