Fodor's Expert Review Pira'e and Arue

Tahiti Nui Town/Village

Extending from PK2 to PK7, these eastern suburbs of Pape'ete have some very interesting sights. However, signage is seriously inadequate and you may drive right past them. Look for the turnoff to the Belvedere lookout at around PK2.5, and if you like architecture check out the colonial-style mairie (town halls), set in tropical gardens, in Pira'e and Arue. The tomb of King Pomare V and the home of American James Norman Hall, who co-wrote the novel Mutiny on the Bounty, are in Arue, as is the Radisson Plaza Resort. On a hill above the Radisson is the now-closed Hyatt hotel.
