Fodor's Expert Review Taravao
Tahiti Nui
Town/Village
The town's location on the isthmus that connects Tahiti Nui and Tahiti Iti made it the perfect location for a fort, which the French duly built in 1844. Today it's used as an army-training center. The PK markers meet at Taravao and here—to evoke the old Scottish song—you either "take the high road or the low road" to explore Tahiti Iti. The town has a post office, banks, shops, a hospital, and a couple of good restaurants.
