Day Trips & Cruises

Whether you're staying in Nadi or a Coral Coast resort, you can get farther into or off the island by joining an organized day trip.

Adventures in Paradise. Two tour options with Fijian-owned Adventures in Paradise offer a balance of natural, cultural, and educational components; both are six to seven hours depending on where you come from. The separate waterfall and cave tours begin with a traditional kava ceremony and storytelling in a village, and include lunch. The waterfall tour takes you to an idyllic natural swimming lagoon with a 120-foot waterfall where you feed fish and learn how to husk a coconut; tours are offered Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

The cave tour includes a short bilibili (bamboo raft ride) that leads to the Naihehe Caves where you see priest chambers and a cannibal oven among the stalactites and other formations. A second, longer bilibili ride, with a chance for swimming in the river, returns you to the bus; tours are offered Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Prices include round-trip transportation. Mala Mala Island Day Cruises. Mala Mala Island Day Cruises leave twice daily for the uninhabited, 6½-acre Mala Mala, about a one-hour trip from Denarau. While there you can snorkel, fish (catch-and-release only), take a glass-bottom boat tour, and play volleyball and rugby. A BBQ lunch is served, beer and wine are available for purchase, and unlimited soft drinks, tea, coffee, and water are included. "Early Bird" trips (8-3) and half-day trips (10-3) are slightly cheaper than full-day trips (10-5) and cost US$93 for adults, US$50 for kids 5-15, and US$254 for families of four. The boat departs from Denarau Marina. Transportation from Nadi area hotels is included and Coral Coast transfers cost a little extra. 670-5192.

Robinson Crusoe Island Day Cruise. The Robinson Crusoe Island Day Cruise offers a taste of the island-resort experience on a 25-acre island just off the coast of Viti Levu. A traditional lovo feast is accompanied by a Pacific Islander-style fire-dance and show. There are live music and a trek to a 3,500-year-old pottery site as well as opportunities to sea kayak and snorkel. Tube rides, waterskiing, jet boat rides, hair braiding, and massages are available at an extra charge. The island also has budget-style accommodations. Prices are US$85 for adults, US$42 for children ages 5-11 and free for children 4 and under and include transfers from Coral Coast and Nadi hotels. Trips run Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.
