Getting Around

The islands of Fiji have a few major cities like Nadi and Suva on Viti Levu and Levuka in Lomaiviti, but mainly there are small villages scattered over the islands. Travel times, therefore, can often be double what you'd expect due to the lack of infrastructure. You can get around by car and bus on the main islands, but in the outer islands like Kadavu, there's even less infrastructure. Travel is primarily by boat, or for those in a real hurry, plane.

Island-hopping is a great way to see the archipelago, and interisland ferry trips and sightseeing tours have increased because of this. There's regular ferry service from Viti Levu to Vanua Levu, Ovalau and Taveuni, and not-so-regular service among the smaller, outlying islands. Ferries transport just about everything from people to cargo and are often on Fiji Time—a slower, more laid-back approach to time and schedules often encountered on the islands.
